Plante and Moran boosting morale, jobs in Illinois

Posted on January 23, 2011

Since being named on a very prestigious list, Plante and Moran are helping to boost morale and jobs in Illinois.

Plante & Moran, PLLC, the nation’s 12th largest certified public accounting and business advisory firm, has been named to FORTUNE Magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” for the 13th consecutive year. The winners were announced today and the full list, which ranks Plante & Moran at 26, will appear in the February 7 issue of FORTUNE magazine (www.fortune.com).

With offices throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio and in Mexico, China and India, Plante & Moran remains a leader in attracting and retaining staff in the competitive professional services arena through progressive workplace programs and time-tested approaches.

Managing Partner Gordon Krater was hired at Plante & Moran in 1980 right out of college and recalls being intrigued by the “jerk free” policy in the firm’s personnel manual.

“The story goes that co-founder Frank Moran was adamant that the firm wouldn’t hire or tolerate jerks,” explains Krater. “When a staffer said that anyone can be a jerk at times, Frank countered by saying Plante & Moran was ‘relatively jerk free’. The concept ended up memorialized in the personnel manual decades ago and remains there – and in our hiring practices – to this day.”

New in 2011 and scheduled for release in the fall is a business book focused on succession planning. Through years of advising family businesses, partnerships and executive teams, not to mention its own detailed management transition approach, Plante & Moran has built a strong reputation for successfully taking companies from one generation to the next.

“Formally capturing some of the firm’s philosophies and traditions regarding leadership development and succession has been on our to-do list for awhile,” affirms Krater. “A book with an emphasis on succession provides us the forum to incorporate our institutional knowledge of core beliefs, best practices, leadership, staff development, and client service in one place and easily share it internally and with the greater business community.”

Since first appearing on the FORTUNE Best Places to Work list in January 1999,
Plante & Moran has grown from 900 staff to 1600 and opened offices in Chicago and Elgin, Illinois, Cincinnati, Flint, Monterey, Mexico, Shanghai, China and Mumbai, India. Despite continuous growth and an expansion of service offerings, the firm preserves its profession-leading staff retention rate and unparalleled client satisfaction levels. In recent surveys, 100% of clients said staff were competent in their fields of discipline; further, nearly 100% of clients said Plante & Moran could use them as a reference and that Plante & Moran was proactive to their needs.
